Foreign Language Software

There are tons of foreign language software titles available - scads, oodles, mounds of 'em. You see them in the bargain bins at office supply stores and among the discount software at Walmart and similar stores. I have a word of advice about these items; if your aim is to learn language, software isn't the answer. If you don't mind learning parts or bits of language, software is fine. In a more generous vein, all language learning software is beneficial so far as it doesn't frustrate or bore the student/user and turn them away from language learning. In my view, the place of foreign language learning software is to scratch the itch to learn until you can get into a class (or better still, travel abroad). It's also useful as a supplement to a language class with a live instructor.

Early television ads for Crest toothpaste used the convoluted and high-falooting language, "Crest has proven to be an effective dentifrice when conscientiously applied in a regular program of dental care," or something to that effect. Regarding language learning software, I say, "Software designed to assist in the learning of a foreign language can be of great benefit when conscientiously applied in a program of regular language instruction."
