French Courses

French language courses come in all sizes and shapes. Sorting through them to get the program that fits you can be a challenge. Let's look at some French courses and see if we can't make your choice a bit easier. We'll start with the lightest and easiest do-it-yourself courses and move up to the serious, comprehensive programs.

Self-Paced Recorded Courses (listening only): These range from a 1-CD or 2-CD package to the mammoth 5+ CD comprehensive courses. If you want to learn French, don't waste your money on these. Take a class. But if you want to begin to become familiar with the sounds of French and learn survival phrases, go ahead. They may have all the words, phrases, and grammar you can handle, but they don't provide feedback. The samples of accents are too restricted. The presentation usually comes off as "canned" or scripted. In short, these courses often become too boring to endure. They make good auxiliary material for class work but aren't likely to bring you to an acceptable level on their own.
