French Language Training

There are not many employers that will pay you to learn French well. With few exceptions, a company sending you to a French-speaking area will pay you during a short (and eventually inadequate) survival-level French course. French language training comes at a cost, unless you know where to turn. Let's see who will pay you to learn French.

In the United States, most government-funded French training is offered by the Department of Defense (DOD) at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, and by the Department of State (DOS) at the Foreign Service Institute in Arlington, Virginia. Other agencies that place their employees in French-speaking areas usually use one of these two facilities. The intelligence community has its own classes. The DOD also funds or operates other language classes in the Washington, D.C. area

French at the Defense Language Institute (DLI - Dliflc.edu) is a 25-week Basic course, possibly followed by an 18-week Intermediate course. As the names imply, there is no advanced level of training in French at the DLI. The Basic course can bring most students to a fairly conversant level and is adequate for most military purposes. The Intermediate course solidifies skills and adds fluency and vocabulary.
