German Language Schools

There are many and various German language schools in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. All are eager to receive you as a student. Some want your tuition money - and to teach you German. Some want to teach you German, and your tuition money will make it possible. It's a subtle but important difference. You want the German language school that exists to teach German.

How do you tell the difference? The leading indicator is feedback from past participants. When assessing a German language center, don't just settle for the testimonials they give on their Web sites or in the brochures. They will always be positive. If your school uses the center in its German Study Abroad program, you should be able to talk to students who just got back. If not, search the Web for feedback. Maybe another university uses the center, and you might reach former students through them. It's that important.

History and Mission: Another important consideration is the history and stated mission of the school. You want a language school that was founded by language teachers or that grew out a language class. As Robin Williams says in the movie "Flubber", "If we were interested in money, we wouldn't have become educators." That philosophy makes for a better German program than a school built to make money.
