Learn to Speak Cantonese

There are two sides to the One China conflict. The big contestant speaks Mandarin. The underdog speaks Cantonese. While the rush is on to learn Mandarin, to do business with the booming Mainland Chinese economy, you can learn to speak Cantonese, favor the underdog, and do business with the "already-boomed" Taiwanese economy. I mean, when you learn how to speak Cantonese, you learn how to speak Chinese. Pure and simple. It needn't be a political decision.

You can learn Cantonese (to an adequate extent) without going to Taiwan. There are free, interactive online Cantonese lessons offered by the China-West Exchange at Chinawestexchange.com. A number of firms, such as Rosetta Stone and Pimsleur, produce Cantonese courses on CD and cassette. (LinguaPhone doesn't offer a Cantonese course.) The Chinese School of San Diego (Chineseschoolsd.com) teaches Cantonese and Mandarin in a full-year program that meets every Saturday morning. The school isn't convenient, but the price is right: $275 for the entire year, plus books.
