For learning French, software can be extremely helpful. French language software, like all products of technology, is making great advances. It still can't replace time with a live instructor, but it makes terrific out-of-class material. The scope and capacity of software for learning French is limited only by the technology. So far it can "listen" and provide limited feedback, it can produce audio and video, it can present situations that require imagination and experimentation, and it can go on and on endlessly. As long as there are companies to make and market the software, there will be new ways to learn French at a PC or via the Internet. But it is limited by the technology. The development of language learning software can't go much further until there are advances in voice recognition and artificial intelligence. In other words, until it can replace the instructor, your best opportunity to learn French is to 1) move to France or some other French-speaking area, or 2) sit in a classroom with a French instructor for an extended series of closely-spaced, regular, content-rich lessons backed up by live feedback and lots of out-of-class WORK.
