The Pimsleur Language Programs are the result of the work of Dr. Paul Pimsleur, who was one of the world's experts in applied linguistics. He taught at UCLA, focusing on language acquisition, especially the "organic learning" of children that speak a language without knowing its formal structure. (My thanks to Wikipedia com for the brief bio.) Pimsleur developed the Pimsleur Language Learning System. Due to its success and popularity, it has been further developed and marketed since his death in 1976. The method works largely on principles observed as children learn their native language. The Pimsleur Language Program approach involves a series of half-hour lessons on tape. The student listens to one tape per day, repeating the words and phrases he/she hears. The course typically runs for 90 days. By this time, the student recognizes many words and phrases and has practice speaking them.
