Dr. Paul Pimsleur was one of the world's experts in applied linguistics. He taught at UCLA, focusing on language acquisition, especially the "organic learning" of children that speak a language without knowing its formal structure. (My thanks to Wikipedia com for the brief bio.) Pimsleur developed the Pimsleur Language Learning System. Due to its success and popularity, it has been further developed and marketed since his death in 1976, expanding to include many languages. Pimsleur Language tapes were a staple of language learning, battling their market competitor Berlitz for decades. Pimsleur tapes have largely been overtaken by technology, yielding to courses on CD, DVD, and BookChip, or downloaded directly in electronic form. The tapes are still available from many sources, usually as used items. New cassette tapes are available from Pimsleur Direct (PimsleurDirect.com) for $295 US per course. That's $295 for the beginning language course, $295 for the intermediate course, and $295 more for the advanced course. I understand that each set of tapes includes 30 or so lessons and more than 15 hours of instruction, but I'd be surprised if they were selling many at those prices.
