Do you want to learn to speak a foreign language but can't decide which one? There's a pro and a con for each of the most popular foreign languages. We hope that this website helps you choose a language to learn and helps you decide how and where to learn it.
Let's consider some of the languages that English speakers study most.
Spanish - relatively easy to learn
- Pro: Spanish is pronounced much the way it's written, and it shares many similarities with English. Also, it is spoken in many countries.
- Con: Grammar differences throw many a student.
French - relatively easy to learn
- Pro: French is the language of love and diplomacy, and it's spoken in a multitude of countries.
- Con: It has many silent letters, so the connection from writing to pronouncing is a hard one.
Japanese - relatively hard to learn
- Pro: Japanese has a logical flow to its syntax (structure) and is said to have a way of ordering one's thoughts. It is also the gateway to an exotic (to most minds) culture.
- Con: You'll have to learn those ideographic characters ( kanji ) if you ever hope to read it. And it's only spoken in Japan .
Russian - relatively speaking, not easy to learn, but not among the hardest
- Pro: Russian is the gateway to great literature. It has a good, solid syntax.
- Con: Cases, numbers, and verbs of motion - you may not know what I mean at this point, but these are three concepts that are quite hard for English-speakers to grasp, especially the verbs of motion.
