Spanish schools are common enough in Spain or Latin America, but actually quite hard to find near home. Much is said elsewhere on this site about Spanish language schools abroad. I'd like to talk a bit about language schools and academies close to home. There are many chances to learn Spanish in the schools or via community resources. There are classes of every size, cost, and level. For a bit of tuition and a few dollars for a textbook, you can be on your way to a gradual absorption of Spanish. But you'll have to bend to the printed schedule and be very patient while the course marches on. If you really want to handle Spanish before you go, you may need professional, focussed help on your schedule. Short of paying a private tutor, a professional Spanish language school is best. A note about tutors: individual attention is good for many subjects but can be tiring, vexing, frustrating, or simply inadequate for learning Spanish. There are many linguistic forms that are more easily learned in a group, such as the genders, plurals, levels of speech, and direct discourse (conversation to multiple hearers). And if your tutor is in any way incompatible with you, the hours of togetherness will have you loathing your sessions, and Spanish. A small class is better.
